Managing the risk of client falls is a hot topic in the retirement and aged care industries. Falls are well known for being a leading cause of injury, with around 30% of adults over 65 experiencing at least one fall per year. This is set to increase as the populations of over 65s in New Zealand and Australia continue to grow. Australian data shows the number of over 65s is likely to increase from 14% (3 million people) in 2010 to 23% (8.1 million people) in 2050. With a steady rate of fall incidents, the cost of falls is expected to rise to around AU$1.4 billion by 2051.

Falls are also the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation in the over 65s and account for four percent of all hospital admissions in this age group. Again, Australian data shows the potential additional demand on the hospital system due to an increased need for hospital beds is likely to double from 2010 to 2051, from 240,000 bed days per year to an estimated 450,000 bed days per year. The use of nursing homes due to falls has also been predicted to rise from around 800,000 beds in 2010 to nearly 1.8 million by 2051.

Fall Detection Technologies

It is no wonder then that there has been a concerted effort in the development of fall detection technology, with new systems and devices coming on the market. At Miracle Electronics, we understand our customers are looking for a fully integrated, reliable system to create a comprehensive safety net. But which solution do you need? Accuracy, reliability, ease of installation and use, affordability, and false alarms are all important considerations.

This complex topic is one we will be reviewing more over the coming months as we investigate further into the different solutions to help give peace of mind and provide enough information to decide on the most effective solution for you.

In the first of the fall detection series, we will focus on and introduce four prominent fall detection technologies—Radar, wearable devices, pressure sensors and intelligent light monitors. We will briefly look into what each offer and areas to consider.

Radar

Radar technology uses radio waves to detect falls. To detect falls, radar uses software utilising a combination of algorithms, machine learning or AI. These provide a method of performing continuous analysis of the data generated to raise an alert based on changes in wave patterns. It is non-intrusive and can cover a wide area, making it suitable for use in homes and care facilities. This technology solution can be expensive, so it is important to scope and define how the system is to operate within the parameters of the specifications.

What it Offers:

  • Non-intrusive monitoring using radio waves.
  • Wide coverage area, suitable for homes and care facilities.
  • Can detect falls without the need for wearable devices.

Considerations:

  • Higher cost compared to other technologies.
  • Potential interference from other electronic devices.
  • Requires professional installation and calibration.

Wearable Devices

Wearable devices, such as those equipped with accelerometers or G-shock sensors, detect falls based on sudden changes in movement and orientation. These devices are portable and relatively affordable. However, they require the user to wear them consistently, which can be a challenge for some individuals.

What it Offers:

  • Portable and can be worn on the body.
  • Detects falls based on sudden changes in movement and orientation.
  • Relatively affordable and widely available.

Considerations:

  • Requires consistent use by the individual.
  • May be uncomfortable or inconvenient for some users.
  • Battery life and charging requirements.

Pressure Sensors

Pressure-sensitive mats and other engineered products can detect falls when a person steps on them or falls onto them. These are easy to use and do not require the user to wear anything. However, they have limited coverage and can trigger false alarms if objects are dropped on them.

What it Offers:

  • Easy to use, no need for the user to wear anything.
  • Can be placed in high-risk areas like bathrooms and bedrooms.
  • Immediate detection when a person steps on or falls onto the mat.

Considerations:

  • Limited coverage area.
  • Potential for false alarms if objects are dropped on them.
  • May require multiple sensors for comprehensive coverage.

Intelligent Light Monitors

Intelligent light monitors use advanced sensors and algorithms to detect falls by analysing changes in light patterns and shadows. These systems can be integrated into existing lighting infrastructure and provide non-intrusive monitoring. Pros include ease of installation and minimal user interaction. Cons include potential limitations in low-light conditions and higher initial costs.

What it Offers:

  • Non-intrusive monitoring using light patterns and shadows.
  • Can be integrated into existing lighting infrastructure.
  • Minimal user interaction required.

Considerations:

  • Potential limitations in low-light conditions.
  • Higher initial costs for installation.
  • May require professional setup and maintenance.

Beware of “Too Good to Be True” Solutions

It is easy to see how the technologies on the market currently offer some protection but with significant limitations and certainly no one-size-fits-all approach to falls detection. One of the most common pitfalls we see is individuals purchasing inexpensive devices online, lured by promises of 100% accurate fall detection. These low-cost devices are unable to deliver the level of certainty required and are not typically supported locally. Fall detection is a complex challenge, and effective solutions require thoughtful integration of technologies tailored to specific needs.
