Project Overview

The completion of a new state-of-the-art aged care facility in Camperdown, regional Victoria, marks a significant milestone, not just for the local community, but for the standard of care available to older Australians in rural and regional areas.

Installed by our Victoria, AU based reseller KTR, they developed in partnership with South West Healthcare and builder A W Nicholson, and delivered as part of the Victorian Government’s Regional and Rural Public Sector Aged Care Revitalisation Strategy, the 36-bed, two-level facility sits on the Camperdown Hospital site and was purpose-built to feel less like an institution and more like home.

Miracle Electronics CareCall™ was selected as the Nurse Call and Emergency Alarm Management system for the facility, a technically critical component that underpins resident safety, staff responsiveness, and operational confidence from day one.

The Challenge

Modern aged care is no longer simply about providing beds and meals. Expectations, from regulators, families, and residents themselves, have fundamentally shifted. A facility of this calibre, designed around small household living and dementia-informed principles, needed a communication and safety system that could match the sophistication of the built environment.

Several challenges shaped the brief:

Dementia-specific complexity. With approximately half of all aged care residents living with dementia, the facility was designed to reduce confusion and promote independence through deliberate spatial cues, natural navigation, and calm, familiar environments. Any alarm or call system installed needed to support that philosophy, not undermine it with harsh signals or disruptive technology.

Multi-level, multi-zone layout. The building spans two levels and includes both private residential households (each with individual rooms and ensuites) and shared community spaces such as a café, hair salon, community room, and reflection room. Delivering consistent, reliable coverage across varied environments, from quiet private rooms to active communal areas, required careful system design.

Regional location, long-term reliability. For a facility serving regional Victoria, ongoing performance and ease of maintenance matter more than they might in a metropolitan context. Downtime isn’t a minor inconvenience, it’s a patient safety issue. The system needed to be robust, scalable, and supportable well into the future.

Our Approach

From the outset, KTR worked closely with South West Healthcare and the project’s construction partners to understand the facility’s operational model and care philosophy, not just its floor plan.

That collaborative approach shaped everything: which products were specified, how zones were mapped, how the system would integrate with the facility’s staffing workflows, and how alarms would be managed across different areas of the building.

Rather than applying an off-the-shelf solution, it was approached with the resident and care team in mind. The household model, where residents are grouped into smaller, familiar living clusters, required a zoning architecture that mirrored how care would actually be delivered. Staff needed to know immediately which household, which room, and which type of alert was being triggered, without being overwhelmed by unnecessary information.

Planning also accounted for future flexibility. Regional aged care facilities need systems that can be updated, expanded, or reconfigured as care models evolve, without requiring wholesale replacement.

The Solution Delivered

Miracle Electronics delivered to KTR a fully integrated Nurse Call and Emergency Alarm Management system tailored to the facility’s two-level, multi-zone layout.

The system provides individual room-level call capability from each of the 36 private rooms, with ensuite coverage included. Zoning aligns with the facility’s small household design, allowing staff to respond with context, knowing which living cluster and which resident has activated a call before they even enter the corridor.

Emergency alarm management is integrated across the full facility footprint, including shared community spaces. The system is designed to be intuitive for care staff at all levels, minimising training requirements and reducing cognitive load during time-sensitive situations.

Where appropriate, the system incorporates features sympathetic to the dementia-friendly design intent, alert tones, visual indicators, and workflow logic selected to support calm, dignified care environments rather than create unnecessary disruption.

The Outcome

The Camperdown aged care facility opened ready to receive residents with a communications and safety infrastructure that is reliable, responsive, and aligned with the facility’s standard of care.

For South West Healthcare and the care teams who will work within this facility, the outcome is operational confidence. Staff can respond to calls quickly and with context. Alarm management is clear, prioritised, and manageable across both levels. And the system is built to last, supportable and scalable as the facility matures.

For residents and their families, the outcome is less visible but equally important: the assurance that help is always within reach, delivered through a system that works quietly and effectively in the background.

For the broader community, this facility represents what modern regional aged care can look like, and the infrastructure that makes it function is as important as the architecture that shapes it.

Key Takeaways

The Camperdown project is a reminder that in aged care, the technology installed matters as much as how it’s specified, designed, delivered and supported.

A nurse call system isn’t a commodity. In a facility built around dignity, independence, and dementia-inclusive design, the wrong system, poorly zoned, clinically harsh, or difficult to manage, can work against the very outcomes the built environment was designed to achieve.

Getting it right requires more than good products. It requires an understanding of how care is actually delivered, genuine collaboration with project partners, and the experience to translate a design philosophy into a technical specification that holds up under real operational conditions.

That’s what Miracle Electronics brings to projects like this. And it’s what projects like this deserve.

Why This Matters

Regional and rural Australians are underserved by aged care infrastructure. The Victorian Government’s revitalisation strategy is beginning to address that gap, but the quality of these facilities depends on every component performing as intended. Nurse call and emergency alarm systems are mission-critical infrastructure. When they work well, they’re invisible. When they don’t, the consequences fall directly on residents, families, and care staff. Investment in the right technology, specified thoughtfully and delivered with expertise, is one of the most important decisions a facility can make.
