Mildura Base Public Hospital (MBPH) offers a vast range of health services to both public and private patients within its 172-bed facility. Recently, they faced one of the health industry’s most challenging tasks, implementing a major systems upgrade without disruption to their existing, high level of patient care. As with many health facilities, outdated systems pose a significant risk, compromising safety, efficiency and responsiveness.

It was essential for the hospital to remain fully operational while replacing old systems with the new, state-of-the-art technology. Situated in a rural area covering a broad geographic region, MBPH operates at full capacity and serves as a tertiary teaching hospital, making it essential to maintain operational flow throughout the upgrade process. Their existing nurse call system, aging and prone to failure, was increasingly affecting both patient care and staff efficiency.

To address these multifaceted challenges, MBPH chose Miracle Electronics’ CareCall 4 system, working through their local resellers and installer, KTR. The modern, IP-based solution designed specifically to meet the growing needs of the health sector. Not only did it offer immediate improvements, but it also aligned with the hospital’s long-term vision of a ‘silent hospital’, a quieter, more patient-friendly environment where noise from alerts is minimised without compromising safety or response times.

The CareCall system’s scalable infrastructure means that as MBPH continues to grow, the system can easily expand without requiring major overhauls. Additionally, the real-time reporting capabilities provide hospital management with deep insights into system and staff performance, enabling them to fine-tune operations over time. One of these future-proofing features is the real-time location services (RTLS) for staff and patients. When they are ready, the hospital staff will also be able to track movements and respond faster during critical moments.

With over 1,000 devices to install across the facility, the rollout required careful planning and execution to integrate into MBPH’s existing infrastructure. “The complexity of taking over and upgrading the infrastructure was a challenge, but through detailed planning and close collaboration between our team, KTR, and the hospital staff, we ensured a smooth transition with no outages,” explained Isaac Murray, Australian Channel Manager at Miracle Electronics. “KTR’s coordination during deployment was integral to maintaining the hospital’s full capacity throughout the upgrade.”

Operating in a rural location presented logistical challenges, but the collaboration between Miracle Electronics, KTR, and MBPH staff ensured the project was completed on time and within budget. From the start, the hospital’s existing system remained fully functional until the new system was ready to take over. “Out of more than a thousand devices, we only encountered two minor faults, both of which were quickly resolved. It’s a testament to the reliability of the Miracle Electronics’ CareCall system,” Isaac said, reflecting on the success of the installation.

For MBPH, the rollout wasn’t just about upgrading technology, it was about enhancing the overall care environment for both patients and staff. The system has made staff communication smoother and reduced ambient noise levels across the hospital, an essential part of the ‘silent hospital’ initiative. “The fact that we were able to scale the system, ensuring it can grow with the hospital’s future needs, was a major win,” said Isaac. “We’ve taken a holistic approach, designing in capability for broader system integration, such as security system interfacing, where features like duress alarms can be managed in one place, prioritising safety, both for patients and staff.”

With the successful implementation of the Miracle CareCall system, Mildura Hospital is well-equipped to meet the growing needs of its community. The advanced technology and seamless integration into daily operations have not only improved patient care but also streamlined staff workflows and communication. The project serves as a prime example of how technology can transform a healthcare facility, even in challenging, rural settings.
